Ulun Danu Bratan Temple is one of Bali’s most iconic and picturesque temples, located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the central highlands of Bali. Situated at an altitude of about 1,200 meters above sea level, it enjoys a cooler climate compared to southern Bali.
In 1633, dedicated to the goddess Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes, and rivers. The temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, as Lake Bratan serves as a major irrigation source for the surrounding farmlands. Balinese Hindus come here to perform ceremonies to ensure water supply for crops. The temple complex consists of several Meru towers (tiered shrines), with the most prominent being an 11-tiered tower dedicated to Shiva and Parvati.
The temple is built right on the lake’s edge, and during certain times of the year, when the water level rises, it gives the illusion that the temple is floating. The temple is surrounded by lush gardens and carefully maintained lawns, making it a peaceful place to stroll and take in the beauty of the surrounding nature.
The lake itself is a key feature. Visitors can rent boats or take a short cruise to enjoy the lake and views of the temple from different angles. A large botanical garden nearby where you can enjoy diverse plant species. The region is known for its cool climate, perfect for growing strawberries, pineapples, and other tropical fruits.
Ulun Danu Bratan is not just a popular tourist destination; it’s a sacred place for Balinese Hindus, so you’ll often witness locals coming to the temple to make offerings and pray.
